A Great Cause

Posted Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at 10:26 PM

Sororities at Southeast have united together for the first time to support one common cause, The Circle of Sisterhood. This organization they've chosen to support is a philanthropy that targets the support of sorority women around the nation to raise funds for women around the world facing oppression and/or struggling to get their education.

I got the privilege to write the story about the cause, and I was excited since I am a sorority woman at Southeast myself. I think the cause is a great one, and I love that the girls here are uniting together for such a powerful philanthropy.

Panhellenic Council, the governing body of sororities at Southeast, has been educating the sorority women about the philanthropy by showing the documentary "Half the Sky", which is a moving film and demonstrates the struggles women around the world are facing. Often times girls in America take for granted the rights they have and do not realize how much different their lives could be if they lived in a different country. "Half the Sky" is successful at demonstrating this fact, because it took several well-known American celebrity women oversees to witness the problem first-hand.

The Circle of Sisterhood has already opened up my eyes to how fortunate I am to live in a country where I have so many freedoms and a right to an education. I am hoping the philanthropy continues to grow from university to university so that more sorority women can come together to get invloved, raise awareness and support.
