The most annoying thing a student can say to me...
Posted Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 8:57 PMSomeone did it again this week! The most annoying thing a student can say to me. I’m in my office in the UC, my door is open and a student lightly knocks on the door and says, “Dr Skinner… Sorry to bother you.” Certainly, I did not jump up at them and tell them they had annoyed me, but I did say to them they were in no way bothering me. ... -
Institutional Confidence, what is that?
Posted Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at 10:55 AMA little more than a week ago I heard the term “institutional confidence” in a meeting. I was struck right away by how this summed up the dynamic currently in play at Southeast. Many of us, students, faculty, and staff remain uncertain about the future as it relates to our University budget. ... -
Reminding me of why I am here!
Posted Monday, February 12, 2018, at 6:57 PMThank you for the mid-year reminder of why I have one of the best jobs at Southeast... direct interactions with students... -
The Emerging Leaders Tradition
Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 3:50 PMI am fortunate to have many great memories of my time at Southeast. Posted Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 8:15 AMOne of my hobbies is being a US Supreme Court watcher. I understand that for most college students this sounds like watching paint dry… Even in my PS103 classes I do everything I can to hype up the Court, but in the end most students are more familiar with pop culture icons than the Justices on the Court. ... -
Do our students even care about elections?
Posted Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 3:55 PMOne of the great things about working with students is to get to hear over and over from people who believe students don’t care about elections. Even in Presidential election years I hear this same thing from some people, young people just don’t care… Of course, national data from the US Election Project shows that the age group of 18-29 years of age is the least likely to vote does not help. ... -
Living at Southeast… Calls to close the group
Posted Monday, September 11, 2017, at 10:09 AMPerhaps no better single decision will define my experience at Southeast more than establishing the Living at Southeast (L@SE) group. Five years ago when I worked in the Office of Residence Life I created this group to help new students meet their roommates and ask questions about living on campus (Hence the LIVING part of the Living at Southeast)...
