Campus FashionPosted Thursday, August 30, 2012, at 12:00 AM
I am the Arts & Entertainment editor at the Arrow. That usually involves covering 'arts' such as theatre and dance and music, which are fantastic things to cover. It is great to have such a strong and successful presence of these arts on campus. However, as I have been walking around campus so far this semester, I have noticed the artistic expression of Southeast students through their fashion. We all know some of the outfits common on campus: athletic shorts and a SEMO tee for guys; nike running shorts, a tshirt and sperrys for girls. These outfits express the active lifestyles and comfort that many college students seek, and many students that I have seen at Southeast are artistic in their apparel as well. As someone that follows fashion trends and thinks of fashion as an artform, I have noticed some of the most prominent fashion trends being worn on campus. That is good for Southeast, as it displays the university's diversity. Students come together at Southeast from Califonia to Chicago and Ireland to Nepal, each bringing in a stye or culture to form one community. As a liberal arts university, Southeast desires for each student to learn about more than just their field of study and part of that learning occurs outside ofclass when students are able to interact withone another. Fashion might not be someone's interest, but students can benefit from learning about the other societies, cultures and personal backgrounds that are often expressed through one's personal style.
