SEMO freshman Joshua Nelson is studying biomedical sciences in hopes of pursuing a career in optometry. Nelson made national news earlier this year for being one in five students out of 288 applicants from his district to land the President's Scholarship to SEMO. After obtaining this prestigious scholarship, Nelson decided to donate $1,000 of his college savings to another student in need. Here, he shares three items that hold a special place within his life. The Bible: In a Bible study when he was eight years old, Joshua learned an acronym for "Bible:" "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth." He still likes to hold his Bible close to him. "The Bible is pretty much what I live my life by. . . Jesus Christ is the head of my life," he said. (Photo by Arielle Adams)

A T-Shirt from his family's reunion: Nelson said his family reunion T-shirt represents the closeness he shares with his family and the ways they are an important component in his life. "I'm a family person; I love getting the family together," he said. With relation aside, Nelson said he loves being with his friends, as well. "Honestly, if you're my friend, then you're my family, too," he said. (Photo by Arielle Adams)

His watch: Nelson said watches are an important staple in his life. "When I was around 10 years old, my aunt gave me a watch, and she said, 'Let this watch remind you that God is always watching you.'" From this moment on, Nelson said he has loved wearing watches. (Photo by Arielle Adams)
