Campus Life at Southeast Missouri State University is looking for applicants to be Camp Redhawk Nest Leaders for this summer.

Camp Redhawk is a program that allows incoming students to spend five days living on campus and exploring what Southeast has to offer while getting the opportunity to meet their classmates.

Nest Leaders serve as role models for campers and administrators of the camp by facilitating camp activities and maintaining dormitories. To be a Nest Leader, applicants must be in good standing with the university, must work within university standards and “must be able to work an average of two hours a week during the spring 2017 semester and May 22 through July 31,” according to the Nest Leader application. The Nest Leader position is paid through the university.

Southeast junior Janna Walker participated in Camp Redhawk as an incoming freshman and served as a Nest Leader. As a resident assistant for freshmen, Walker said being a Nest Leader helped her get to know her incoming residents.

“I’m an RA for the freshmen, so it was nice to help them and show them around,” Walker said. “I had some of my residents as campers so that was nice because I got to meet them in advance.”

Walker said being a Nest Leader taught her about working with others and being a good leader.

“I learned how to work well with others,” Walker said. “Sometimes people don’t agree with you and they don’t do things how you do things, so you kind of have to get used to people who are different than you and have different ideas. We did a lot of activities so you kind of have to tone down what you’re thinking and listen to someone else. Someone can have good opinions even though they aren’t the same as yours.”

Walker advised students wanting to apply to be Nest Leaders to be neutral about the experience.

“You just have to be open-minded … it’s a really good experience, and it looks good on a resume,” Walker said.

Camp Redhawk will be held the weeks of June 11, June 18, July 9 and July 16.

Applications to be a Nest Leader can be found at semo.edu/campuslife/campredhawk and close Feb. 1.
