Campus Outreach at Southeast Missouri State University had an all-Greek event on Tuesday, Oct. 18, to give each homecoming pairing a chance to win money for their philanthropy.

This was the first year this event was held, and, every year Campus Outreach has an event for the Greeks in order to donate money toward their philanthropy. In the years prior they always had a flag football tournament where homecoming partners would compete against each other. However, this year they were not able to have the flag football tournament due to scheduling.

Campus Outreach still wanted to donate to philanthropies and bring all of Greek Life together, so it was decided to make it a competition in a different way.

“It’s a pretty cool thing where everyone can get together to compete and hear about Jesus as well,” Tony Exler, student leader of Campus Outreach, said.

Each homecoming pairing competed as a team for this event. Whoever had the most people show up out of the homecoming pairings were considered the winners.

“It is a really good opportunity for all of Greek Life to come together and be able to support their philanthropies,” Ashley Stuck, a junior in Alpha Delta Pi, said.

Campus Outreach is a Christian ministry on campus that provides opportunities for students to learn about God and Jesus Christ in a Christian context. There is an event called 828 every week starting at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

828 is the event all Greek chapters were to attend. It started with Joey Babich, campus director of Campus Outreach, greeting everyone who participated. He then asked each homecoming pairing to have a girl and boy represent their chapters in a game. The winners of the game were Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Tau Gamma. The game played was only done for entertainment.

There were two guest speakers who were both alumni of Greek chapters. The male who spoke was an alumnus of Pi Kappa Alpha at Mississippi State and the female guest speaker, Jackie Beattie, was an alumna of Alpha Delta Pi at Southeast. Each guest speaker was asked questions by Babich about why they joined Greek Life, what did they love about it, but wasn’t fulfilling to them.

“The things I was looking for the most don’t get you far and I quickly learned that those things I thought were so important were not fulfilling me,” Beattie said.

The main speaker of the night was Sigma Chi alumnus Nathan Mart. He had 20 minutes to talk to everyone about how God is eternal. Mart finished his discussion with a prayer.

Everyone was asked to go on the Twitter account for Campus Outreach and fill out a quick survey on the link provided. It asked questions like what chapter are you in, who is your homecoming partner and would you like to keep coming to 828. From this survey the organization was able to calculate who the winners were.

Alpha Xi Delta and Pi Kappa Alpha were announced as the winners by having the most show up out of any other chapters. The pairing won $5 for every person who showed up and they get to donate the money to their philanthropies, Autism Speaks and the Taylor Trudeau Cycle for Life Foundation for cancer research.
