During the holidays, the average person tends to become extra giving to those less fortunate than them as we grow closer towards the end of the year. Those people are exactly what Southeast Missouri State University's Foundation hope to gain during a charity on Nov. 29 called Giving Tuesday.

#GivingTuesday is a worldwide social media initiative that allows people to give to certain charities online and participate in the initiative. This will be Southeast’s first year participating in #GivingTuesday by launching their one-day campaign called #SEMOgivesback, where people will be invited to give a one-time gift of $10 to Southeast’s “We are One” scholarship fund that will benefit a student for the 2017-2018 academic year. Donors will be invited to give their gift either online, by phone or at campus events held that day.

“We will have students on different parts of campus encouraging other students, faculty and staff to donate what they can to the scholarship,” Trudy Lee, director of planned giving at Southeast, said.

The Southeast Foundation goal is to raise $5,000 on Nov. 29. If the goal is met, a generous anonymous donor has agreed to match the money as a needs-based endowed scholarship.

“Five thousand dollars is just our goal, we would love to overcome that goal and help Southeast students long into the future,” Lee said.

The Foundation said any donation, large or small, would be greatly appreciated — though if one were to make a donation online, a $10 minimum will be required.
