Southeast students hoping to add some culture to their weekends need look no further than Cape Girardeau's First Friday with the Arts. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, the event provides local and international artists with multiple venues to display and sell their work, while offering free food and entertainment to those who attend.

First Friday is comprised of a network of multiple galleries connected via free shuttle service. Running from 5:30-8:30 p.m., the shuttle transports patrons between galleries and allows attendees to enjoy First Friday's numerous exhibits while setting their own pace for the evening.

Southeast senior and first time vendor, Morgan Henley, says the First Friday event gives everyone in the community the opportunity to socialize with one another and see work created by local artists.

"It's really the only time we have to get out and see local art. This is something that they do in big cities and it gives local artists the chance to share their art and feel special. It gives you something to work towards," Henley said. "I think it's important not only for art students and artists to get out and attend, but I think it's important for the whole community."

Henley, who is currently earning an M.F.A with an emphasis in sculpture, says the event gives her the opportunity to network with other artists and is an important part of her creative process.

"As an art student it's awesome to get out and see what everyone else is doing outside of school. It's very motivating, especially when you see the work of people you go to class with in the First Friday shows," Henley said.

Local artist Charles W. Burton, who has been involved with First Fridays for several years, says the monthly event plays an important part in promoting the arts in Cape Girardeau.

"A community without art is a community without expression. Without art there's no culture and culture is what determines whether a community is just surviving or if it's thriving," Burton said. "I think First Fridays are a sign that our community is thriving."

Southeast graduate Pam Barrath, who creates and sells jewelry at the event, says she never knew about First Fridays when she was a student, but says it's a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a free night out once a month.

"It's free. You can get out of your dorm room and get free food and enjoy free music and entertainment. It's just a quick walk down the street from your dorm room and you can have a fun free night out and meet local artists," Barrath said.

First Friday has become a popular event on Cape Girardeau's social calendar, and offers a refreshing alternative for anyone looking for an enjoyable way to support the arts in their community.

The next First Friday is on March 4. Admission is free and shuttle transportation is complimentary. Shuttle service runs from each venue every 30 minutes from 5:30-8:30 p.m. For more information on featured artists and upcoming events, visit the Arts Council website at www.capearts.org.
