Redhawk women's basketball guard Katie Norman shares her thoughts about Southeast basketball and reminisces past experiences.

As a freshman Norman played in all 28 games and started in 19. She was the team leader scoring 202 points, tied for third with 7.2 points per game average, second on the team in field goal percentage, second in team with 46 assists and 23 steals, and led the team with 15 blocked shots. Norman was ranked third in the team in shooting .306 percent from three-point range and .789 free throw percentage. In OVC contests she averaged 8.3 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, shot .350 percent from the three-point range, and was 22 for 26 from the free throw line. At home Norman averaged 8.6 points per game, led team in scoring for three games, and for six games scored in double-digits. Norman is also a member of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll and is a Southeast Scholar Athlete.

"Women's basketball has a history of a winning program and I had the opportunity to play as a freshman," said Norman when asked why she decided to attend Southeast.

In 2009 at Freeport High School in Freeport, Ill. she made First Team Class 3A All-State selection, Chicago Sun Times All-State Second Team selection, led her team to back-to-back state title game appearances, and won NIC-10 MVP. As a senior Norman was four-time All-Conference selection, averaged 12.0, 5.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. Norman ranked fourth in Freeport High's all-time list by scoring 1,309 points all throughout her high school career. She also ranks second all-time in assists with 534, fifth in steals with 276, and seventh in blocks with 75. Norman became the only player in school history to record a tripledouble. She was a Scholar Athlete and managed to also play volleyball, where she was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection as a senior, and made High Honor Roll.

Norman has been playing with Southeast teammate Courtney Shiffer since high school.

"We've become good friends and it's been a lot of fun playing with her," said Shiffer. "We always find each other on the court."

Coach Ishee has pushed Norman hard since she's arrived at Southeast.

"He pushes me every day and tells us to always play hard," Norman said. "His way of coaching is very effort based."

Norman grew up on the court thanks to her basketball coach dad whom inspired her to play.

"He's who I look to most," said Norman.

Many players have helped Norman but one in particular has helped the most. Junior guard Bianca Beck has influenced Norman to play tough by playing tough against her.

"She's a hard worker and gives 100 percent in everything she does," Beck said. "I play tough for her to be ready to play against a tough opponent."

Norman is looking forward as she continues her basketball career at Southeast and is setting goals for herself and the team.

"I want us to get better every day so we can make it to the conference championship and post season," said Norman. "I also want to be a leader for the team on and off the court."
