Although Photography Family Day is an event that happens every semester, this time is a little more interesting than usual.

Since the Andy Warhol photograph exhibition started on Nov. 1, this year's Photography Family Day will be taking a cue from Warhol himself.

The Warhol exhibit features 93 Polaroid photographs and 50 silver gelatin prints that Warhol took. Gelatin printing is the former photographic process until it was eclipsed by color photography. Celebrities such as "In Cold Blood" author Truman Capote and singers Liza Minnelli and Carly Simon, along with other friends and anonymous models also are featured. Included in the exhibit, as well, are different landscapes and interior photos of rural and urban settings that are meant to show the balance of the ordinary and the sublime.

"We do a family day every semester, and this is one of our most prominent exhibits," Ellen Hahs, curator of education for the River Campus, said.

During the three-hour event people can come in and listen to different lectures, look at a historic camera collection, view the Warhol exhibit or even participate in one of the many hands-on activities that will be provided.

The activities include learning about different photographic development techniques, macro lens use, photo-based digital art and digiscoping.

With the photo-based digital art, Hahs also said that the instructors will be taking and editing photos like Warhol's "Marilyn Diptych," a silk screen painting done of Marilyn Monroe in the weeks following her death.

There are four different speakers during the afternoon. Southeast Missouri State University assistant professor of art Emily Denlinger will speak at 2 p.m. about photographic art; local photographer Aaron Horrell will speak at 2:30 p.m. about photos of nature; bed and breakfast owner and local photographer Tom Neumeyer will speak at 3 p.m. about photography at night; and, KFVS12 meteorologist Brian Alworth will speak at 3:30 p.m. about large format film photos.

"I'm really excited to hear Emily Denlinger," Southeast student Evyn Johnson said. "I've always found her art really unique."

Photography Family Day will be from 1-4 p.m. on Nov. 16 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 573-651-2260 or email museum@semo.edu.
