To many people Tim Tooley was the kind of guy that you could rely on whether it was in the classroom or just to make you smile.

"He was also the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back and the last dollar in his pocket if you were in need," friend and fraternity brother Matt Biehl said. "We had a number of classes together, and he was also the one I went to if I needed a little help. His help really turned some of my C grades to B's."

Tooley died from a self-inflicted injury on Wednesday, August 7. He was 22.

Tooley was working toward a bachelor's degree in science and business administration. He had "gone alumni" in his fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha at the end of the spring semester, which meant he was still a member of the organization but no longer had to fufill all the requirements of active members.

"Tim was the ideal Pike," Pi Kappa Alpha president Andy Baker said. "He was always the first person to volunteer his time and attended every meeting. He always made grades and never caused any sort of trouble. People trusted Tim. When someone was down, he was the first person to put a smile on their face. Whether he was walking to class or doing homework, Tim always looked happy. Tim's smile is what I will miss most about him."

Tooley was initiated into Pi Kappa Alpha in the fall of 2009 and was a member for four years. Baker didn't join until fall 2011 and said Tooley was one of the first people he met while joining.

"He was often quiet and kept to himself," Baker said. "But when he spoke, people listened. He definitely had a presence about him. If he was in the room, everyone knew it."

Biehl said Tooley was also very passionate about the fraternity. He took up many positions and responsibilities just to help out.

"He truly was a brother you can count on," Biehl said. "He was the behind the scenes kind of guy who never expected to be recognized for his work."

A funeral was held for Tooley on Monday, August 12 at the Dardenne Presbyterian Church in O'Fallon, Mo. Instead of flowers, Tooley's family asked for memorial donations to be made to the American Cancer Society.

According to his memorial website, Tooley was the son of Stephen and Carol Tooley and Melanie Embrey; brother of Cindy Kohler, Samuel (Megan) Kohler, Rachel (Shane McKinley) Kohler, Josh Tooley, and Shaun Tooley; half-brother of Zachary Kirschenmann and Ethan Embrey; grandson of Ruth V. Tooley and Vernon and Mary Hall; nephew of Cynthia Tooley and Barbara (Jerry) Kneemiller; and boyfriend of Brooke Dial.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Sol and Phyllis Winner, his "surrogate grandmother" Virginia Leonard, grandfather Richard E. Tooley and uncle Jon Hall.

"His death was a shock for all of us in the fraternity," Biehl said. "But he will never be forgotten, and he will forever be missed."

The fraternity already is planning an annual golf tournament in Tooley's honor.
