Choosing a college can be downright agonizing for some, but Southeast Missouri State University hosts "Show Me Days" to alleviate some of the confusion for potential students.

Show Me Day is a university-sponsored open house program organized by the Office of Admissions. Each year this program dedicates several days to students considering Southeast as their next four year venture.

This year potential students will have five dates to attend a Show Me Day. The first day will be on Oct. 5. Although most fall on a Saturday for the convenience of families and prospective students one date is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 17, which is President's Day. Through these events students will learn what to expect from college, and what they can anticipate their time here at Southeast to be like.

"It's a great event that really gives them [potential students] a feel for Southeast," Show Me Day coordinator and admission counselor Ashley Harris said. "They get to meet new people and speak with groups on campus like Residence Life."

During the tours students are shown just about everything that Southeast has to offer varying from the residence halls to the professors they may have. Each tour is given by one of the 78 student ambassadors employed through the university. The ambassador position is available to any student who has attended Southeast for at least one semester.

On average at least 300 prospective students attend each Show Me Day. Meeting a professor in a field of study they may be interested in is another key reason why so many attend and according to Harris, this still happens on Saturday's.

"With our personal visits we like to do a faculty appointment as well, but on Saturday's that's not as easy seeing how they're not in their offices. So we have an academic fair for the students. There are representatives from every department on campus so they still get the same experience as they would through a personal visit," Harris said.

Prospective students also are shown how they can finance their education at Southeast through scholarships and other programs. Another highlight of the tour is the Jane Stephens honors program. At the end of each tour the families, friends, and of course the prospective students are treated to a free lunch at Towers Café.

For freshman Cameron Beachy the experience of Show Me Day was a beneficial one.

"I chose to go so I could check out SEMO and see what majors were offered," Beachy said. "The tour detailed what each building was for and I got to meet some of the professors. I'd recommend this tour for students, especially if you're not sure about what major they want."
