On Oct. 3, the Southeast Missouri Redhawks women's volleyball team took the court at Houck Field house to play against an Ohio Valley Conference rival the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.

Sporting their pink breast cancer awareness month jerseys, the Redhawks came out in attack mode.

In the first set, the Redhawks quickly put two points up on the scoreboard. Tennessee Tech (7-12) soon answered back but the Redhawks controlled the tempo of the game.

Led by sophomore rightside hitter Madalyn Werth's five kills and freshman middle blocker Jessica McElderry's two blocks, Southeast went on a series of runs through the first set to claim it with the score of 25-16.

In the second set, the Redhawks came out ahead again starting off with a 3-0 run against the golden eagles.

As they did in the previous set, Tennessee Tech gets on the scoreboard and then scores again. The Redhawks then went on to score the next five points unanswered.

The Golden Eagles were trying to play catch up with the Redhawks but like in the first set, the Redhawks took over the game and ended up taking the second set 25-13. Fifth year senior outside hitter Andrea Baylin led the Redhawks with four kills of her own.

The third set started off different from the others.

The Golden Eagles came out of the intermission scoring the first two points of the set.

The two teams then began battling back and forth and then Baylin scores a big point to tie up the set at 9 apiece.

Baylin then goes on to score three big kills that not only gave her team the lead, but secured the lead as well.

When the Redhawks took the lead there was no looking back. Southeast ended up taking the set and match in only three sets.

Baylin had six kills total in the last set and freshman setter Allie Henkelman pitched in eight assists to lead the Redhawks to a 25-15 win of the third set and also the match.

Baylin finished the game with a double double tallying up 13 kills and 14 digs to lead her team to victory. Baylin was motivated from the fact that Redhawks were picked to finish seventh in the conference.

"The conference didn't really rank us that high" Baylin said.

To describe the performance of herself and her teammates on Friday night Baylin went on to say, "We didn't get off to the greatest start so we just decided to leave it all out on the court."

The win moved Southeast's record to 5-14 overall and also gave them its first win in OVC play, moving the Redhawk's conference record to 1-3. Next Friday, the Redhawks will go on to face another member of the OVC, Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Kentucky at 6 p.m.
