As they continue on their tour, the Glenn Miller Orchestra will visit the Southeast Missouri State River Campus on Oct. 15.

With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra blends swing, dance and contemporary music in its concert performances. The band formed in 1937 and has recorded songs such as "Moonlight Serenade" and " Chattanooga Choo Choo."

A local jazz enthusiast, Dawn Howell, said she would love to see the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

"I'm a very big jazz fan," she said. " I think they would be very exciting to see in performance."

Even though she will not be able to make the concert at Southeast, she will make it a priority to see them live.

"I like to see uniqueness in the performances I go to," Howell said. "I like when they incorporate their own sound into a piece and have a variety of instruments being played at one time."

Alton Glenn Miller started his musical career when his father brought home a mandolin. He quickly traded it for an old horn and began playing every chance he got. He toured with other orchestras before he formed the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

When the orchestra was brought into fruition, they quickly broke attendance records all over the East Coast. They've played sold-out shows and Miller's recordings still sell millions of copies.

Ellen Farrow, manger at the River Campus box office has sold 651 tickets so far for the event.

"This is a special tour coming to Southeast, and we are very excited to have them come to our campus," Farrow said.

John Winkler, another local Jazz fanatic, is hoping to attend the concert.

"I have not got my ticket yet, but I like to attend any concert that is jazz related," he said. "They always make for a great time."

He has listened to the Glenn Miller Orchastra before and enjoys their music immensely.

"Their music is feel-good type of music and it always is good to listen too," he said.

Winkler is excited to see how many students will attend something that isn't a rock concert.

"I have never seen a concert on a college campus, so it will be interesting to see how many students will be attending something like this," he said.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be performing at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the River Campus' Bedell Performance Hall located in the Cultural Arts Center.

Tickets are either $28.00 or $34.00 and can be purchased at the River Campus box office on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. or by calling the box office at (573)-651-2265.
