Students fearful of packing on the pounds after moving back to campus have opportunities to keep themselves healthy on campus.

Southeast Missouri State University has ways for students to stay in shape and keep the pounds off. Fitness classes start the first week of school for students, faculty and staff who are interested in purchasing a pass for the fall semester.

"The first week of school will be free for everyone with a valid Southeast ID," Southeast graduate student Christine Paige said. Paige is working on a Master of Science in nutrition and exercise science.

The classes at Southeast have a wide variety of levels and are typically 45 minutes long, except for lunch express classes Monday through Friday.

"Our lunch express classes are free every week and are offered to anyone that is a student, staff or faculty member on campus," Paige said. "They're each 30 minutes long."

The Student Recreation Center-North has 23 classes ranging from aerobics, aquatics, dance and martial arts to physical performance.

"When I teach college students, they're always energetic and are always excited to be here," Paige said. "I can tell they love to be here and they're always motivated and shouting with me during classes. It's always a fun group."

Paige has taught classes for two years and loves instructing Butts and Guts and Piloxing.

"This fall I'll be teaching Zumba, lunch express Pilates and Piloxing," Paige said.

Piloxing involves a mixture of muscle sculpting and Pilates incorporated with cardio and dance that helps maximize cardiovascular health. Butts and Guts focuses on the lower body muscles in the core, hips and thighs.

"At this level with college students, I teach my instructors what they need to offer at different levels," Paige said. "For instance, like our Boot Camp class, it can be hard, but if a new beginner comes in then we'll make modifications at that time."

Paige said that all group fitness instructors are certified by the American Council on Exercise and Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.

"There are a lot of different levels when teaching the classes, so I try to make it challenging enough for the experienced and make it manageable for the beginners without scaring them away," Paige said.

Other classes provided at Southeast are Aqua Zumba, Body Sculpt, Boot Camp Remix, Cardio Blast, Crunch-less Abs, Cycle Fit and Kickboxing.

A day pass for classes costs $5 and a semester pass is $40. Passes can be purchased at the operations center inside the Student Recreation Center-North.

Students can call the main office at (573) 651-2105 or contact Christine Paige at crpaige@semo.edu with any additional questions.
