The Southeast Missouri State University football team had the largest lead of the game, but were unable to hold on in their season opener against Central Michigan University.

The Redhawks had a lead of 24-10 during the first half and went into halftime tied 24-24 with the Chippewas.

Southeast lost the game 38-27, which was played at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Mi.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Scott Lathrop started his first college game. He threw for 120 yards and one touchdown and ran for 31 yards and one touchdown.

"Scott is competitive and he put on a good show," Southeast coach Tony Samuel said. "He really handled himself well and played with a lot of poise."

The Redhawks had difficulty stopping Central Michigan running back Zurlon Tipton, who ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior free safety Tylor Brock and sophomore cornerback Reggie Jennings led the Southeast defense with 10 tackles each. Senior linebacker Blake Peiffer added eight tackles.

"I thought we played well," said Samuel. "The effort was great, but our timing and some other things were off. I'm looking forward to getting back to practice."

The Redhawks will play Mars Hill College at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at Houck Stadium
