Southeast football fails to catch up to Salukis

Saturday, September 15, 2012

The Southeast Missouri State University football team trailed SIU Carbondale by three touchdowns at halftime and was unable to close the deficit during its game at Saluki Stadium in Carbondale, Ill.

"We didn't play well in the first quarter in particular," Southeast coach Tony Samuel said in a university press release. "I thought we were too excited and overplaying things early. We have to get off the field from a defensive standpoint."

The Redhawks lost to the Salukis 35-14. SIU scored two touchdowns during the first five minutes, 15 seconds of the game.

SIU quarterback Kory Faulkner threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns. Southeast had 186 yards of total offense.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Scott Lathrop completed seven passes for 50 yards. True freshman quarterback Blake Jackson threw for 23 yards and one touchdown.

Redshirt freshman running back Lewis Washington scored a touchdown with 14:15 left in the fourth quarter that made the score 21-7. It was the closest the Redhawks would get to catching the Salukis.

Junior kicker Joe Vucic punted a career-high nine times and a total of 408 yards.

"Joe had some good punts tonight," Samuel said. "He is very consistent."

Senior linebacker Blake Peiffer had a game-high 18 tackles and senior safety Tylor Brock finished with 10 tackles.

The Redhawks have a record of 1-2 this season. Southeast's next game will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at Houck Stadium in its Ohio Valley Conference season-opener against Tennessee Tech.
