Southeast Missouri State University soccer player Meg Herndon died Thursday evening at Barnes-Jewish hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Herndon, 21, had been hospitalized in critical condition since Sept. 9 when the scooter she was riding collided with a black Ford F-250 at the intersection of Sprigg Street and Normal Avenue.

"The entire Department of Athletics is mourning the tragic loss of Meg Herndon today," Southeast athletics director Mark Alnutt said in a press release. "We extend our deepest condolences to Meg's parents, family, friends and teammates, who have all shown inspirational strength in dealing with these challenging circumstances. Meg was a brilliant student-athlete who touched the lives of countless individuals in the community, something that has been shown with the uncanny support displayed over the past few weeks. She personified the term student-athlete by every definition with her dedication in the classroom, community and on the field."

Herndon's mother wrote a post on caringbridge.org Thursday evening.

"With such heartache and sorrow, but also with joy I must share that Meghan Elizabeth joined the angels and I am sure greeted by many," Cindi, Herndon's mother said in the post. "I hope heaven is ready for her for she is going to give them a run for their money."

The Southeast soccer team cancelled its games for this weekend.

Herndon, a senior from Fenton, Mo., played in 55 games for Southeast and started 39 games. She was a three-time Southeast Scholar Athlete and was named to the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll three times.

Herndon's liver and kidneys are being donated, as well as her rare B-negative blood, according to the post by Cindi Herndon.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday at Kutis Funeral Home in Affton, Mo. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Church in Fenton, Mo.
