Redhawks fall to EKU, 31-7

Saturday, November 3, 2012

Southeast Missouri State University lost 31-7 to No. 23 Eastern Kentucky at Houck Stadium Field this afternoon.

The Redhawks gave up the ball twice in its first three drives and only managed 262 yards of total offense, struggling to find any momentum.

"We needed to start early against them, and we didn't," Southeast head coach Tony Samuel said in the post game press conference. "We turned the ball over early and they got up on us quickly."

Southeast seemed to be moving the ball on their first drive until redshirt-freshman quarterback Scott Lathrop threw an interception that was returned to the Redhawks 8-yard line. The Colonels punched the ball into the end zone four plays later.

Lathrop threw for 56 yards and one interception and ran for 30 yards.

On Southeast's second drive, the team was able to stop the Colonels' offense on fourth and goal, early in the second quarter. The Redhawks momentum broke after senior running back Levi Terrell fumbled a pitch on an option play.

"It was on me," Terrell said regarding the mis-handled pitch. "I just didn't get my hands on it."

Terrell rushed for 57 yards on 16 carries, which was enough to put him over 1,000 yards rushing on the season.

The Redhawks lone touchdown came late with four minutes, and three seconds left in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run by freshman quarterback Blake Jackson. It was his first touchdown of the season.

Jackson rushed for 80 yards on 10 carries.

The Redhawks record fell to 3-6 on the season and 2-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Colonels improved to 7-3 and 5-2 in OVC play.

The Redhawks next game will be against Eastern Illinois University at 11 a.m. Saturday in Charleston, Ill.
