Southeast Missouri State University was closed immediately today due to a water main break. While residence halls will remain open, offices and classes will resume Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014.

Mark Arnold, a Graduate Hall Director for Greek Area Housing, attended a meeting held earlier today by the university.

"Basically there's just a break in one of the pipes and they were trying to put in a temporary pipe to reroute it and then something happened," Arnold said. "So it's going to take a little longer to fix than they were expecting."

Arnold said that they are unsure of what caused the break, but there was a damaged pipe located outside of Towers that Facilities Management was able to repair. However, there is another pipe break located between the boiler plant and Cheney Hall and that is the area that will be the main focus for facilities management and the university for the next few days.

Arnold said that he does not necessarily know why classes were cancelled, but believed that the large areas around campus that have been affected by the break most likely played a big role.

"I don't know exactly why but it was more so just communicated to us that campus was shutting down," Arnold said. "I would assume that since it affected an entire half of campus, that that is why they decided to shut the campus down."

While classroom buildings and offices are closed until Tuesday, Towers Café, Rowdy's and River Campus dining will remain open. Only the River Campus and Green shuttle will operate during the closing, and both will run from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

The football game against Missouri Baptist College that is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28 and the women's soccer game scheduled for Friday, Aug. 29 will proceed as planned.

Towers computer lab, Student Recreation Centers, and The Show Me Center will remain open.
