Students wait outside as the Cape Girardeau fire department checks for toxic fumes at Southeast's on-campus Subway in the Mark F. Scully Building.

Noxious fumes were confirmed to have appeared at Subway and We Proudly Serve Starbucks at Mark F. Scully Building on Southeast Missouri State University's main campus by Doug Richards, director of the Department of Public Safety.

"It's just a [noxious] fume was in the air in there," Richards said. "We tested. There was no toxics in the air. It was just some kind of little freak thing, whether it was in the air vent systems or something."

Richards said that there were no forms of toxins in the air when it was tested by the Cape Girardeau fire department. He added that while there was an ambulance at Scully to medically assist a faculty member at the scene, it was unrelated to the fumes.

"This was just a clear out for safe guards till we could test to make sure there wasn't any kind of toxins in the facility, and it's already been reopened back up," Richards said.

According to a Southeast Facebook post, Subway will reopen at 5 p.m., while We Proudly Serve Starbucks in Scully will keep its regular hours.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. today. No reported illnesses occurred.
