The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team (4-9) faced off against the Southern Illinois Salukis (7-6) at on Sunday.

The team lost to Southern Illinois after the fifth set 15-10.

The team won third (25-23) and fourth (25-21) sets, after losing the first (24-26) and second sets (22-25).

Southeast coach Julie Yankus said despite the loss the team did very well.

"We did well with terminating the ball tonight, and we also had low errors," Yankus said.

Yankus also said that some things that they will work on is aggressive serving and communication.

Before the season began the team has played in three tournaments.

"We played some teams that were ranked in the 30's and 40's in the nation," Yankus said. "This showed us what we're capable of."

Senior outside hitter Andrea Baylin, who was awarded the "Game-saver of the Match," said that she does not feel rewarded about that title because of the loss.

Baylin knows what she and the team needs to focus on for their next match.

She said that one thing they need to work on is confidence in themselves.

"We are confident at the beginning of the set, but once we are down our attitude changes," Baylin said.

During the match, the team seemed to be in constant communication with each other on and off the court.

"Our team has a close bond with each other," Baylin said. "I would not have a problem sitting in a room alone with any of them, we get along so well."

This was the home opener for the team. For this weekend, the teams goal was to not only beat SIU, but also to break the record for the largest audience the Houck Field House and they did that by reaching an audience of 1,206.

The previous record of 1,168 was set on Nov. 9, 1993, when Southeast played Murray State.

The Redhawks defeated Murray 3-1 in the match.

Free "Houck 'FILLED' House" T-shirts were given out to the first 1,000 students through the gate.

During the inaugural Houck "FILLED" House event a year ago, the Redhawks came up 141 fans short of their goal.

During the game the team hosted a silent auction. Items included St. Louis Cardinals tickets to a 2015 game, a chance to be coach for a game and many other items. The money from the auction went directly to the team.
