Student arrested for producing fake IDs

Friday, October 24, 2014

A Southeast Missouri State University student was arrested for possession of forging instrumentalities and counterfeiting fake state driver's licenses and identification cards.

"We suspect he's been doing this for quite a while and there's quite a few of those IDs that he's made out there," Sergeant Jason Selzer with the Cape Girardeau Police Department said.

Seth Stevens, who is listed as a student in the Southeast directory, was found intoxicated at the 400-block of Marie Street and was bleeding from what appeared to be falling down at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 4.

After he received a medical examination from his fall, Stevens was placed under arrest for Minor Visibly Intoxication, according to a Cape Girardeau police press release.

While being booked for his arrest, Stevens received text messages on his phone, requesting information on how to obtain fake identification, that was clearly visible to the police. A separate investigation regarding Stevens' connection to fraudulent state identification cards was then started.

"We received information that we thought he was making fake IDs and we got enough for a search warrant," Selzer said. "We got a search warrant for his residence and found the [equipment] to make false identification, along with some fake IDs and it was enough for the prosecutor to charge him."

The 20 year old's bail was set at $10,000. **

"We haven't found a person who has one that they were trying to use one right now," Selzer said.

Selzer added that local bars and liquor establishments have been made aware of what these fake identification cards look like..

"The people that he's given these to, they should be aware that we know the type of ID, the kind he made, and we've let the bar establishments know, so if they're going to take the risk of using them, they stand a good chance of getting caught," Selzer said.
