"Journey" is an annual literary journal that publishes original writing by Southeast Missouri State University students.

The first Southeast literary magazine was "The Potboiler," which was first published in 1966 and lasted for four issues. The literary magazine was reproduced in 1971 as "Journey," and has been published annually ever since.

"Journey" is produced solely by Southeast students. Submissions are open to all Southeast students, regardless of their field of study. The new issue is usually available by the start of the fall semester each year. Copies can be picked up from the "Journey" rack on the third floor near the elevator in Grauel Building.

Dr. Daniel Crocker, the faculty adviser for "Journey" is currently looking for student volunteers to help assist with reading and judging the submissions that might be published in the magazine.

Students will also be responsible for formatting the literary journal and also creating the cover. Volunteers read student submissions and format the magazine using computer program software such as InDesign and Photoshop, which gives them hands-on experience and prepares the issue for mailing.

"A college student literary journal is often the first place a student publishes his or her work," Dr. Susan Swartwout, who was once the faculty adviser for "Journey," said. "Many 'Journey' writers have gone on to publish their work nationally."

Students who would like to get involved must contact student Andrea Wills to find out the upcoming meeting times.

"We normally produce 1,000 copies of 'Journey' each year," Crocker said. "These are distributed across campus for free, as well as at student move in and other campus events."

This school year there have been more than 400 extra copies printed due to students' interest.

Student writers can submit works of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and photography at several submission boxes around campus. Two submission boxes are located on the third floor of Grauel and Kent Library.

"It really is a good showcase of our student writers," Crocker said.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in getting their work out to the public. Readings are held once a month for students who would like to come out and have their work heard by the public at Cup 'n Cork located at 11 S. Spanish St. The first readings of the semester were Monday, Feb. 9, at 9 p.m.
