The Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team set a season-high final score and also defeated the Texas Woman's University team in a meet on Feb 15. The Redhawk's final score was 194.55 and TWU's final score was 190.825.

Along with setting the season's highest final score, several athletes personally set season-high scores and career-high scores in different events.

"It tells you you're doing something right, you know?" Sixth-year head coach Kristi Ewasko said. "Not only in the gym, but just in them as people that they want to get up and come and they get to do something that they love, and for me that's what it's about. It's an opportunity to do something that pushes them through these four years of college. So to see them improve in the gym as well, that's huge for me as a coach."

Sophomore Ashley Thomas, set her career-high on beam with a score of 9.825 and was also the first place all-around winner of the day.

"It's good [to be the all-around winner], but it's much better that our team did well because we've kind of been struggling down in the low 190s, so to pick it up and get a 194 is the really exciting part," Thomas said.

Ewasko, agreed that that win was an improvement for the team.

"Tonight, our routines were on and I'm really proud of this team for stepping it up after a bit of a struggle on Friday night," Ewasko said.

Sophomore Alyssa Tucker, was one of the athletes who stepped it up; she set her career-high on floor with a 9.825 and set her season-high on the uneven bars also with a 9.825.

"I was kind of hoping to set those goals, and waiting for the floor because I've been working really hard on that so I feel really good right now," Tucker said.

The Redhawk's scored higher than TWU in all four events. Vault, 48.725-48.100, Bars 48.575-47.475, Beam 48.700-47.025 and Floor 48.675-48.225.

"Today was not our best competition unfortunately," Texas Woman's head coach Lisa Bowerman said. "We love competing here and are happy to be back, but unfortunately we just didn't put together four strong events today. We had to count some falls, and in the end it ultimately affected our team's scores."

This was the seventh meet of the season and the third win for the Redhawks.

With two more home meets in the season, the team is looking for some student support.

"As athletes, we love support, especially from the student body, and the community with families and things." Ewasko said. "Gymnastics gives you more than just flips. It gives you learning responsibility and dedication, commitment and teamwork and I would really love for the community and the students to see that and to continue to support us."

All home meets are at Houck Field House and the next one is this Friday at 6:30 p.m.

"If we could get a big crowd that would be great, because we really feed off of their energy," Thomas said. "When there's a lot of people here it's more fun and it gives us energy so it helps a lot."
