Southeast Missouri State University's Student Activities Council plans to provide students and staff with several opportunities for entertainment during the final eight weeks of school.

The initial week consists of a movie night, a concert with MKTO on Saturday but begins with a comedy show with Arvin Mitchell to start "Spring Fling Week," a week full of activities to get students back in school flow following Spring Break.

Mitchell, a native of St. Louis who is known for his appearances on BET's show "Coming to the Stage" and his appearance as a comedian in the film "Dance Fu" in 2011, said that he is looking forward to his trip to Southeast.

"My sister (Carla Jordan) went to school down there and I have been down there a couple times before, and I just like the region," Mitchell said. "I love playing to college grounds because they receive things a lot different than club crowds and church crowds."

Mitchell has had his fair share of guest appearances in clubs and already established comedian events prior to him landing a spot on the BET's "ComicView."

"ComicView" is a comedy platform that has been a stepping stone for many past and current comedians such as Chris Tucker, Bernie Mac, Marc Viera, Rickey Smiley and another St. Louis native, Cedric the Entertainer, just to name a few.

Mitchell's comical side and ability to impersonate well has led to opportunities to host college step shows and charity events.

"I actually didn't know I could do it as a career. I was just doing it for fun and things just started to take off," Mitchell said. "I never had stage fright myself because I was always the class clown or entertaining my family when we were having fun."

"If you have a passion for it you have to just get on stage and do it to see what it feels like," Mitchell said. "The truth of the matter is, the people who are sitting in the audience are way more afraid of being on stage than you would probably be because at least you are considering it."

The procedure SAC goes through to provide entertainment and informational acts throughout the year for Southeast consists of a thorough selection process by comedy coordinator Abhishek Suryavanshi. Suryavanshi attends a national convention to watch acts of well-known comedians and works to make agreements with them financially.

Following Suryavanshi's recruiting, the group of candidates are then passed along to Joanna Shaver, coordinator of campus programming, to create a slideshow for popularity vote by members of the council.

Ben Mulholland, SAC president and a Southeast junior, said the overall selection of the comedians set to visit campus involve some individual research in addition to research from other talent vendors.

Mulholland is looking forward to the event due to hearing prior performances of Mitchell and understanding that there will be students whose hometown is St. Louis.

The council's decision to bring in comedians throughout the semester came after students' suggestion and with this specific council being created for satisfaction of the student body, high attendance is expected to support and provide a positive atmosphere for Mitchell.

In addition to seeing university support, Mulholland added that he was looking forward to hearing Mitchell's White Castle skit because the restaurant has been a favorite of his as well as it being an aspect that most college students can relate to.

Mulholland's past experiences and views of Mitchell's past acts led to high expectations and plans for an exciting performance.

"He's funny and provides bold, adult content, but at the same time he's respectable and puts on a good hour-long show," Mulholland said.

The event will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Rose Theatre. Admission is free to all Southeast students and faculty with valid identification.
