Brittney Seabaugh was a junior at Southeast Missouri State University working toward a degree in pre-veterinary animal science when she died on Nov. 7, 2011.

Dr. Julie Weathers, animal science professor in the agriculture department, said that Seabaugh was a phenomenal student.

"Brittney was an amazing girl," Weathers said. "She was involved with every single ag club in the department, which is pretty cool because we have a lot of clubs.

"She was really sweet, really involved. She really wanted to go to [veterinary] school and had a passion for animals."

Since her death, the Collegiate Farm Bureau has hosted the Brittney Seabaugh Memorial Trivia Night in her honor.

All the proceeds from past trivia nights have gone toward either a scholarship fund or have been used for improvements to the agricultural facilities on campus.

This year will be the fourth year the club has held the event.

Senior member of the Collegiate Farm Bureau Dakota Oehl said the trivia night is a tribute to Seabaugh's memory.

"We put it on every year as a tribute to Brittney Seabaugh, and we use the proceeds from it to fund events," Oehl said. "The first year we had it all the money went to a scholarship in her name. The second year we hosted it [the money] went toward a memorial fire pit out at the farm so we could host activities at the David M. Barton [Agriculture] Research Center."

Weathers said the idea of a trivia night came from the Collegiate Farm Bureau, with immediate support from other clubs in the department.

"The Collegiate Farm Bureau brought it forth that they wanted to raise money, and then [Horticulture] Club and DTA [Delta Tau Alpha] were big proponents of agreeing that we needed to do something, so Farm Bureau hosts it, but everybody really helps out with it," Weathers said.

Weathers said the decision for a trivia night fundraiser came from Seabaugh's fun-loving personality.

"Brittney liked to do fun things and be involved, so we decided we wanted it to be an event and not just a 'bring in $10 for the fund,'" Weathers said.

Weathers said that after the trivia night, the club votes on where the money raised should go.

Weathers said ideas are already in the works for where the proceeds will go after this year's event.

"One of the big things that I think we'd like to see is some landscaping-type situations around the pit at the greenhouse and the fire pit at the farm so there's a place for students to gather at the ag department events," Weathers said.

Weathers said the trivia night is a way to keep Seabaugh's name fresh in the department.

"I think it helps because it gets her name up there and it helps people remember that she was here and that she was a big part of our department," Weathers said. "Not everyone got to know her, and now we're getting to the point where no one was here [when Seabaugh was]. I think this senior class is the last one that was here when Brittney was here."

Oehl agreed with Weathers on that note.

"It is one of those things, now, there's not very many of us that actually remember Brittney being here because it has been four years now since she passed away, so most of the students don't actually remember her in person," Oehl said. "It is more or less just to keep her name out there. It is a way to keep her name alive in the department."

The Brittney Seabaugh Memorial Trivia Night was scheduled for March 6, but due to the snow it has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in the University Center Redhawk Room.
