Vocal Fire is Southeast Missouri State University’s first glee club. The group prides themselves on being an outlet for students who are passionate about music and want to relieve stress.

“It is going to be a place where you can come to and it doesn’t matter how your day has gone or if something has happened,” Alicia Decker, secretary of Vocal Fire, said. “For me it’s a passion getting into the music.”

“It’s an outlet, stress outlet for those that jam out late at night in their bedroom with a hairbrush, barefoot,” Jennifer Parker, Vocal Fire’s president, said.

The mission of Vocal Fire is for students to come together and each celebrate their passion for music. HollyAnne Hoering, Vocal Fire vice president, said she wants Vocal Fire to be a group where everyone has similar interests and talents. She wants the club to be a place where people can make friends and make connections with people who have the same interests as them.

“I had this idea of starting a glee club, and I was also watching Glee on Netflix for awhile,” Parker said. “I had this vision, I’m like I wanted to be able to do this.”

Michael Bowling, Vocal Fire’s public relations executive, said he hopes for students to do what they like to do without fear of judgment from others. He also wants the group to be a place where people can come and feel comfortable to express themselves with others who share their interests.

Vocal Fire has some creative and innovative ideas in store for potential members.

“I really want to do a flash mob,” Parker said. “I want us to do a performance maybe at a football game. We could do Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande — the ideas are endless.”

Bowling would like to possibly host some karaoke events for the club.

Having prior music experience isn’t a requirement for membership. However, some of the officers do come from a musical background.

“My mom has always been a singer,” Hoering said. “We are very artistic in our family. I guess when I first started singing was 6 years old, I was in voice lessons. I competed at Benton Neighbor Day in Benton, Missouri.”

Parker said that since she was little she has always wanted to be on stage. She joined choir and was involved with music all throughout middle school and high school.

As far as choosing artists and genres, Vocal Fire is open to covering music of all platforms.

“Some people said Disney songs. I want to do a couple Michael Jackson songs,” Decker said.

Bowling said he does not mind doing music of other cultures.

“I am a German minor I would like at some point if we could cover a German song,” Bowling said. “I would like to have a little bit of multicultural [music] in there.”

The name Vocal Fire was the treasurer’s idea. Decker said that the group thought of some names and decided on Vocal Fire.

“Vocal cause we are going to be singing,” Decker said. “Fire because we are just going to be on fire [you know singing, dancing, the whole thing].”

Vocal Fire will make their first debut walking in Southeast’s homecoming parade, but as of now, there are not any performances set in stone just yet.

“We really want to do a kickoff performance in general soon. We will be walking in the parade,” Parker said.

Vocal Fire meets every other Friday from 6-8 p.m. Further details are currently still being made for the location. Prospective students who are interested in joining Vocal Fire can do so by liking and messaging the Vocal Fire Facebook page or by emailing Parker at jcparker4s@semo.edu.
