Brandon McWhite a Senior Pike Kappa Alpha member majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology leads a busy life. His hobbies are not exclusive to just hanging out with his friends, or going to the gym, but also include DJing in his spare time.

McWhite found his passion for DJing during his freshman year of college at Southeast Missouri State University. That is when he quickly learned that DJing was something he wanted to continue doing.

“I became a DJ because I have always had an ear for music. People always come to me to find out about the newest songs,” McWhite said.

His first regular gig was at a bar previously known as Slingers in Cape Girardeau before it closed down.

A DJs set has to consist of at minimum, two turntables/CDJs, a mixer, laptop and dvs system.

However, each set is different. As time went on, money came around and McWhite’s passion for DJing grew fonder. His DJ setup continued to grow as well. McWhite said he was able to afford most of his equipment because of other gigs. He bought his first setup with the money he made at Slingers and purchased it for $200 on Craigslist.

His personal setup now includes two vinyl turntables, a Rane 62 mixer and a laptop. He also uses a pioneer DDJ-SR controller for smaller gigs.

“My favorite part of DJing is being able to rock the party and make sure everyone is having a good time,” McWhite said.

McWhite said his own favorite DJs include Fourcolorzack and DJ Chris Villa.

“[DJ Chris Villa] has some of the cleanest scratching I have ever seen,” McWhite said.

McWhite loves to pump up the crowd.

“The reason people enjoy Brandon DJing is because he doesn’t just play one genre of music,” Derek Billups, who was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha at the same time with McWhite, said. “He tries to include all styles and genres. He’ll play recent music and back in the day music that will have you thinking about your high school and middle school days. Also, when DJing and mixing songs the transitions from one song to the next is perfect. Gets the crowd where they need to be.”

McWhite currently DJs at Last Call in Cape Girardeau but has recently been taking his talents to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale on the weekends. There he DJs at Stix, and he's also the resident DJ at Levels. McWhite's music can be found at www.soundcloud.com/djjmcwhite.
