Two days before Halloween Southeast Missouri State University’s glee club Vocal Fire held its first performance. “Vocal Fire’s Spooktacular” was at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the downtown coffee shop Cup ‘n Cork.

A 30-minute musical ensemble were the sounds heard a loud in a retro coffee shop surrounded by colorful paintings and vintage artifacts.

Audience members sang along, as the club stood front and center on a wooden stage.

Nostalgia is what the club created performing songs from classic Halloween films, such as Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and Disney’s “Hocus Pocus.” “Her Name Is Alice” by Shinedown was the

Sound effects and vocals from the feature films were blasted through the speakers. As the background sounds and effects played group members not only sang the songs, but they acted them out.

“Come Little Children” from “Hocus Pocus” was the beginning song. Dressed in all black “spooky” attire, the women of Vocal Fire delivered vocals citing lyrics such as “Come little children I'll take thee away, into a land of enchantment.”

Following the “Hocus Pocus” classic was the cover of “Her Name Is Alice,” by Shinedown. Just like the women, the men of Vocal Fire were still seen dressed in all black.

Dressed as “Alice In Wonderland” Kaela Shoemake participated in the performance. Shoemake is the younger cousin of Vocal Fire’s vice president HollyAnne Hoernig.

Shoemake said she thought the performance was fun and that she became a part of the act because Hoernig asked her to.

“Holly asked if I would be Alice in it, so I got excited about it when she asked me,” Shoemake said.

Closing out the Halloween-themed performance was none other than “This Is Halloween” from the film “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

Alicia Decker, Vocal Fire’s secretary, said the group chose a Halloween performance as the first performance for others to become familiar with the club.

Decker said it was surreal for the club to have finally held their first performance.

“Its crazy, its like unreal.” Decker said.
