A Southeast Missouri State University student crashed head on into a tree by Towers Circle on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Around 10:38 p.m., a motor vehicle crash was reported to the university Department of Public Safety.

According to DPS, the driver was exiting parking area 3-6 when he failed to navigate the turn which led him to strike the tree.

"I asked him if he needed to go to the hospital and he said no," officer Matt Proffer, who arrived at the scene, said.

Once emergency services evacuated, the driver was able to leave the scene. Many students were outside after the accident occurred. One of those students was Brendon Kertz, a freshman living in Towers North.

"All of a sudden I heard a big boom and it frightened me because it sounded like a gunshot, so my friends and I immediately took action and evacuated the building," Kertz said.

The vehicle had front-end damage and was towed shortly after the incident took place. There were no passengers involved and there were no reported injuries to the driver. Proffer also said the wreck was an accident that occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
