SGA to host Lip Sync Benefit

Thursday, August 11, 2016

On Aug. 22, the Southeast Missouri State University Student Government Association will `host its first Lip Sync Benefit for student organizations. The benefit will give organizations the chance to recruit members as well as fundraise for a philanthropy of their choice.

SGA’s president, Peyton Mogley, was inspired by LL Cool J’s show Lip Sync Battle, which pits celebrities against one another in a lip sync performance competition. Performances are complete with lighting, costumes, sets and dances.

“We adapted that concept, instead of a battle necessarily, we decided to turn it into a benefit,” Mogley said.

Any student organization or group of faculty and staff can participate. Each group may be represented by one to six members of the organization and will be given 30 seconds to promote their organization and then one minute and 30 seconds to perform. SGA will provide the stage and the sound system, and participants provide whatever else they need.

After each performance, the audience has the opportunity to give donations to the organization’s charity of choice.

Mogley said she hopes the benefit can become a new tradition on campus.

“We have the traditions of the Ice Cream Pig Out and the other Engage in Eight programs, but we want to start a new tradition for student organizations,” Mogley said.

The Lip Sync Benefit will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in the University Center Ballroom. For a full list of participation rules, go to the SGA Lip Sync Battle Facebook page. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13.
