Rockin’ 4 Relief is a not-for-profit organization that provides financial aid for the families of police officers, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics who were killed in the line of duty.

The organization was started by Southeast Missouri State University student Jennifer Rubin when she was 12 years old. Beginning in St. Louis, the program has spread and reached Cape Girardeau. Rubin said Rockin’ 4 Relief has “narrowed itself down to three main goals.” These goals are to provide aid to the the families of fallen emergency responders, provide comfort and security for the individuals who work in these careers everyday and to create a positive connection between the younger generation and emergency responders within their community.

Rockin’ 4 Relief is comprised mainly of volunteers, usually ranging from the ages of 13 to 19. Volunteers will rock in rocking chairs for 10 hours collecting donations and showcasing the cause they are working for.

Beginning in 2009, the program has raised $110,000 and has given teens and emergency responders a “stress-free environment to interact and understand each other more.” The program has been recognized by Oprah Winfrey who donated $13,000 in 2012.

Lieutenant Bradley Smith of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said Rockin’ 4 Relief is a “Great opportunity for college students. Not only are the able to learn how to approach and interact with businesses but also gain essential social skills and to be a part of a great organization.”

Rockin’ 4 Relief will kick off in Cape Girardeau on Oct. 8. Every individual in Cape Girardeau is encouraged to approach the volunteers in their chairs to learn more about the program. Citizens, students and emergency responders alike will be present to support the organization and spread its message. For volunteer information, go to www.rockin4relief.com.
