The Show Me Center hosts a variety of events throughout the year. From concerts to trade shows to graduation, monster truck rallies, rodeos and Southeast men’s and women's basketball games the building houses a variety of events to serve the Cape Girardeau community.

Though if one is to enter the Show Me center for these events he/she may notice that something changes, the change is the floor.

During Redhawk men’s and women's basketball games, the floor is the traditional wood, which allows athletes to play in the most competitive manner.

“The basketball floor is laid piece by piece beginning with the middle pieces then working its way out,” Show Me Center marketing director Abbie Vander-Bol said.

According to the Show Me Center website: “Due to its unique design, the Show Me Center is versatile enough to stage multiple events simultaneously and flexible enough to host a rodeo one evening and basketball game the next.”

“We can have two crews of totaling 15 people pick up the basketball floor from the outside in and can have the floor up in a fairly short time,” Vander-Bol said.

The website also states that the Show Me Center floor can be changed in virtually any different way depending on what the event needs. Seats can be taken out or added to create more or less space, creating a capacity from 2,500 to 7,600 guests attending one event, with the maximum space of the floor being 156 feet by 205 feet.

According to Vander-Bol when a rodeo or event that needs dirt is held, a local company is hired to bring in the dirt then take it out when the event is completed.

“The company usually only leaves a fine dusting of dirt, allowing our crews to clean it up quickly and prepare for the next event,” Vander-Bol said.

Although the website does state that there are a few limitations to the floor For instance, ice cannot be added and neither can dashers. Dashers are barriers that prevent the audience from entering the ice.

The Show Me Center’s upcoming events are Southeast men’s and women’s basketball games, which will be held at 2 and 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4. The basketball floor will then be gathered and removed on Feb. 6 as former Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson speaks as part of the University Speakers Series.
