Southeast classroom 205 and anthropology lab located in the Art Building is closed due to termite damage.

According to Southeast Communications and Marketing News Bureau Director Ann Hayes in a email. Upon further inspection, Facilities Management found there to be damage in the floor joists in the northwest corner of the building sustained by past termite damage. The floor joists are located in the ceiling of the anthropology lab and a faculty office room 109.

Hayes also states that “The University has had a structural engineer on site who is developing scope of work and associated cost estimate related to the floor joist issue. In addition, a full structural assessment of the building is being completed.”

When these assessments are completed the information will be brought to the university President Carlos Vargas and Board of Regents to decide when and how to fix the damages in Art Building, Hayes added in the email.

Anthropology major and student lab worker Lauren Waldrop said after the lab was shut down everything that was housed in the lab had to be relocated to the lounge space in order to keep the artifacts safe.

“The artifacts and materials in there need to be kept safe, the room is locked with only a few people having a key,“said Waldrop.

Waldrop had two classes inside the lab before it was closed. These classes are now held inside the temporary lab, which is smaller and makes work difficult for students.

“We lost our sink we need to rinse and dump out water we use to clean artifacts. This is a relatively messy job. The large sink we had is what we needed,” Waldrop said

Though Waldrop later explained that a sink has been put in for this job, it is only about one-fourth the size.

“Nothing really seems to have been fixed, a very temporary wall was put up to cover the damage,” Waldrop said.
