On Monday, Feb. 20, Kent Library hosted the third annual Murder Mystery, which sought to give Southeast students entertainment while educating them about all of Kent Library’s resources.

The event took place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Reading Room on the third floor of the library and sent students on a journey throughout the building to retrieve clues and help solve the murder.

Several Southeast students were in attendance and teams of four went off in search of clues. Along the way, students met various suspects and used these interactions to further aid their search.

The premise of the mystery involved eccentric millionaire Sam Disney, a wealthy and mysterious donor who went missing, along with his money. The six primary suspects each had something to tell and something to hide, but only one was guilty of murder.

The suspects included Detective Mattie Jiggs, a clueless crime-solver with a suspicious demeanor; Cain Able, a has-been movie director who is deep in debt; Mayor Horace Tabbeyville, a local political figure desperately seeking re-election and the funds that come with it; Rebel McGreggor, a self-proclaimed “rebel with a cause” covering something up; Flora Fauna, an out-of-luck librarian; and Mamie-Eve Dempsey, an out-of-work literary agent and self-proclaimed psychic who also happens to be the girlfriend of Rebel and ex of Cain.

Old yearbooks, crossword puzzles, magazines and suspect interviews led to the discovery of Flora Fauna, who was found dead. In addition, there was the recurrence of the name P.P. Pimms, a mysterious author who was never seen, but had issues with many of the suspects. Once the clues were assembled, everyone convened back in the Reading Room to crack the case.

In an ironic twist, it was revealed that there was never a Sam Disney; this was just a hoax made up by P.P. Pimms, otherwise known as Flora Fauna. Flora had been ripped off by Cain Able and was the debtor to Rebel McGreggor, who owed a crippling sum to some dangerous people. Flora discovered his gambling habits — the cause of his debt — and was subsequently murdered by Rebel, with some assistance from his girlfriend Mamie-Eve. This concluded an entertaining evening of mystery, money and murder.

The event was well-received by students.

“I would do this again,” Senior C.J. Nervo said

Freshman Whitney Whiteside said the event was an opportunity to practice her interests.

“I [recently] got really into mysteries,” she said.

Leah McAlister, the arts resource center library associate, said the event was a product of the Library Student Outreach Committee’s efforts to give students a fun time while educating them about Kent’s many resources and areas of interest.

“Our goal was, and still is, to have events where students can have fun and maybe learn a little about the library in the process,” McAlister said.

This is the third consecutive year for the Murder Mystery, and while the event is still in the process of attracting a noticeably substantial crowd, McAlister said that she is thankful to be a part of the event each year.

“Just seeing [students] have fun and working together, learning about the library, is my favorite part of this event,” she said.
