Southeast Missouri State men's basketball team played against Austin Peay Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Show Me Center with a crowd of 3,746 fans.

Southeast has the No. 5 seed for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and would need to win four games to be the OVC champions.

Southeast beat Murray State last week to take the No. 1 spot in the West. Saturday night's win would have put Southeast in a historic double-bye position in the OVC tournament and the No. 2 seed.

Southeast wore the black uniforms for this game and Red-shirt senior forward Trey Kellum started the game with the first basket and finished the game with 20 points. Freshman guard Tahj Eaddy came back down for a 3-pointer after Kellum's basket.

Southeast started midway through the game in a 1-3-1 trap keeping the pressure on Austin Peay, which led to 14-25, and a 56 percent open 3-point shots by the Governors by the 9-minute mark.

The crowd was silent as both teams went through a dry spell for about 3 minutes to leave the score at 21-24 Austin Peay at the 7:12 mark of the game. Trey Kellum was fouled and made the front end of two shots.

The Redhawks pulled within three points before Austin Peay was fouled on a plus-one to make the score 23-32 with 5:25 left in the first half. The crowd started to get frustrated as they felt that fouls were committed and not called

Prior to the 3:41 timeout, Trey Kellum was fouled again with the chance for the plus-one. Kellum missed the free throw to leave the game at 25-36 with 3:22 left in the first half.

At the 1:48 mark of the first half, Austin Peay's Drake Clayton was ejected from the game. The lead then was cut to 34-39 Austin Peay.

Southeast regained possession to come down court and a foul was committed to send Kellum to the free throw line in which he converted one of two. This changed the momentum of the game for Southeast as they pulled within one at the half to make the score 40-41 Austin Peay at the break.

The Redhawks took the lead 42-41 at the 18:49 minute mark. The game was going back and forth with Southeast trailing 46-50 at the 15:22 minute mark. After a basket made by Antonius Cleveland senior guard the lead was closed to within four at 50-54, Southeast was down 58-66 at the 11:03 mark. The Redhawks started to show a momentum change at the 9-minute mark with a basket by Cleveland to bring Southeast to 63-66, and a free throw by Cleveland cut the lead to 64-66.

The game was tied at 68-68 with 7 minutes left before senior forward Kenny Jones made a 3-pointer to take the lead for Austin Peay to make it 71-68.

Cleveland made a 3-point shot to tie the game at 71-71. The Governors opened the lead to six before Denzel Mahoney was fouled to cut the lead to within four. At the 1:04 mark, Southeast trailed 76-82. Austin Peay extended the lead out to 10 points before Mahoney made a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 79-86 with 30.8 to go. Austin Peay would not look back and held the lead to finish the game 79-88.

The Redhawks were 27-72 at 37.5 percent field goals. 21-77, 77.8 percent from the stripe. The Governors were 28-54 at 51.9 percent field goals, 18-19, 94.7 percent from the stripe.
