Facilities Management will be shutting down power to the majority of the Southeast Missouri State University campus on Friday, April 14.

According to an email sent to students who live on campus, all buildings on campus will be affected except for Henderson, Greek Village and the Dobbins River Campus Center.

The buildings that will not be affected by the power outage are not on the campus electrical grid and receive their power directly from Ameren.

Power will be out 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and utilities such as hot water, cold water, heating and air conditioning, laundry, elevators and internet will be affected.

Dining services also will be limited, with brunch only being served at St. Vincent’s Commons at the Dobbins River Campus Center 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A shuttle will run the normal River Campus route 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dinner will be available at Towers Café, Redhawks Market and St. Vincent’s Commons 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. All locations will provide a buffet-style meal.

Facilities Management hopes to finish a few different projects while the power is out for the day.

“While power is off Facilities Management will be testing all backup generators on the Cape campus and perform much needed general preventative maintenance,” Brent Pfeiffer, utilities maintenance supervisor, said.

When the power is out, steam production at the power plant also will stop. They will be taking this opportunity to replace various steam lines as well as conduct other needed maintenance in the plant. Ameren also will be replacing a utility pole at the northeast corner of Parker Field.

“There are no electrical improvement projects planned for this outage,” Pfeiffer said. “It is strictly for maintenance and utility pole replacement.”

Planned power outages occur twice a year in order to take care of any needed maintenance and preventative care. They are always scheduled for Good Friday and the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.
