Magill Hall hosted the Apex Life Sciences Seminar Wednesday, April 26, to help Southeast science majors find potential careers.

A dozen students were in attendance for the seminar, and their majors ranged from chemistry to biomedical science to biology and more. The event was held to teach science majors how to build a resume, utilize job-hunting techniques, have successful job interviews, and learn what recruiters are looking for in prospective candidates.

A representative from Apex Life Sciences hosted the event and talked to students about the job market for science majors, as well as ways to utilize Apex’s recruiting tools to successfully find a job.

Kelsey Orf, a technical recruiter for Apex and the seminar’s speaker, told students there are several things they can do to make themselves stand out to employers.

“You can learn from us what employers are looking for,” she said. “We can give you that one-on-one, personal assistance with resume writing, interview tips, career approaching, trying to find that right job in that right industry.”

Apex Life Sciences is a national clinical and scientific staffing company founded in 1985 that specializes in facilitating jobs in the fields of life sciences and engineering. There is an office in St. Louis that headhunts for companies such as Monsanto, Pioneer, various pharmaceutical companies, and several other science organizations. Apex is home to several national branches, all of which operate under the purposes of getting jobs for students and job-seekers as well as finding employees for the companies they represent.

Southeast seniors Hailey Thompson and Cassie Park say the event opened their eyes to new information in the scientific career market.

“Thinking about my future, I wanted to see what was said [at the event],” Thompson said. “I wanted to learn what kind of job opportunities are out there.”

Park said the event taught her new and useful information regarding jobs in the biomedical field, the career path she is studying for.

“I didn’t know about [a lot of] the resume-building tips she talked about, especially the ones that pertained to lab technicians,” she said. “I was not aware of companies [like Apex] that work to help students find jobs.”

Orf said her favorite part about working for Apex is the chance to help people thrive in the professional life science world.

“Our motto is ‘People first,’ and I think that is very important [when] working with people every day,” Orf said. “I get a lot of excitement and joy out of it, and that keeps me going every day.”
