In October, the Southeast Women’s Club Volleyball team will be hosting a tournament at the North Rec Center. Women’s Volleyball Club president Briana Nowak said all are welcome to get involved with the tournament. Nowak takes some time to talk about the club and the upcoming tournament.

Practices are held twice a week at the western gym of the North Rec Center. Each practice lasts for two hours. “We try to make them competitive and hard so the girls will work hard because we obviously want to win the tournaments,” Nowak said about team practices.

Not all club members have to participate in tournaments to be in the club. The types of members who are in the club are general members and traveling members. “Traveling members will go to tournaments with us and play there and will try out because we have so many girls that want to travel, and then general members are just girls who will come out and practice with us,” Nowak said.

These tournaments are not exclusive to just one team in the club.

“We try to take two teams with us to a tournament, but it really just depends on the positions that we have and how many girls we have,” Nowak said.

There is not a deadline for when students can join the club.

“But if they are looking to travel, the earlier the better, if they want to go to these tournaments, I need to see them at practice first in order to pick who I’m going to take to the tournaments,” Nowak said.

Women’s Volleyball Club runs in the fall from mid-September until Thanksgiving break, and in the spring from the start of the semester until mid-March, with the last two months of the school year being free, Nowak said.

The club is open to students at Southeast whether or not they have past experience playing volleyball, but most members have played at some point before joining the club. Nowak said most of the club members have played volleyball or another sport in high school. They also have a lot of members who played in high school, but decided to not play in college.

“The club has a good effect on its members. For a lot of the girls, it lets you meet new friends, especially as a freshman,” Nowak said.

Volleyball club has helped Nowak find more friends on campus, “I’ve made some of my best friends through joining this club team, and I just love it a lot, and it’s a great thing to join if you aren’t involved in something,” Nowak said.

The tournament takes place on Oct. 21st and will be held in the western gym of the North Rec Center. “As of right now, we have eight [teams], but we would like to have up to 12. So if any more teams are willing to join, we will have more, but 12 is the most we can have,” Nowak said.

For information on how to join, Nowak’s contact information can be found at the semo.edu website on the “Intramurals and Club Sports” page.
