Last Call gave students of Southeast sad news on April 18 as they announced effective immediately they would be closing their doors.

Whiskey Business, LLC which operated as “Last Call” had its liquor license from the city permanently suspended after 12 years of business, co-owner and general manager Cory Huskey said. As of right now, he said there are no plans to reopen or rebrand Last Call.

Last Call tweeted the news and students and community members came forward showing support for the business owners on Twitter. Then many stopped by the bar to pay tribute by leaving empty alcohol bottles, flowers, photos and notes about what the establishment meant to them.

Huskey saw the “shrine” the day after and said it was “bittersweet.”

“It’s good to show that we were appreciated by our patrons, but at the same time having something taken from you that you worked so hard for is a little rough,” he said.

Husky also said he doesn’t plan to remove the items people have left around the building.

Huskey said in addition to leaving mementos, people have been taking portions of the physical structure, including fencing from around the bar’s patio.

The establishment was a favorite spot of many students and also a employer of many students. With the sudden closure many students are left without a job, like bartender James Barrett.

“It kind of came as a surprise to all of us,” he said.

Barrett is graduating in May and said he will have to start saving and even call on his parents for some help.

“There is no way I am getting another job before May, so I am just going to ride it out,” he said.

Last Call was one of the first bars Barrett attended in Cape Girardeau. He said he will miss all the memories and friends made there over the years.
