The Southeast volleyball team is 4-0 and off to its best start since 1986, when it won its first five matches. The Redhawks look to build on their start this weekend when they make their home debut in the Redhawk Invitational.

The Redhawks are riding high with three-game sweeps in all four of their matches, the first time they have done so as a Division 1 program.

“My entire four years here we haven’t started off this way, and I knew from the beginning of preseason that this was going to be a special year and a special team,” senior captain Madeline Grimm said.

Middle blocker Krista Berns said the team spent a lot of time practicing, passing and blocking during preseason. She said that they try not to worry about what the other team is doing, but rather focus on their game and what they know they are good at and need to get better at.

“Our strongest asset in our team right now is just the belief we have in everyone on and off the court, I think everyone on the court really trusts each other,” Grimm said.

They make it their goal to be the loudest in the gym, Malloy said. She said their bench has a lot of depth and is very supportive, which helps the players on the court.

Coach Julie Yankus said one thing she would like to improve on for this weekend is the team’s offense.

“Defensively we’re doing a really good job with blocking, really shutting some teams down, but offensively we need to get in a flow, which we will,” Yankus said.

The three teams coming to play in this weekend's tournament are the University of Louisiana Monroe, Radford University, and Northwestern State. The Redhawks play their first game of the tournament against ULM at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Houck Field House. They play Radford at 7 p.m. on Friday and Northwestern at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
