Rainy weather did not ruin the night for Karla Davis at the Tunes at Twilight event Friday.

The 2010 Colgate Country Showdown and 2012 contestant on “The Voice” merely moved indoors to City Church and entertained the crowd.

This free summer concert series is normally hosted at Ivers Square in downtown Cape Girardeau. However, this week the concert was moved indoors to the City Church due to poor weather conditions. The last-minute relocation may have kept some people in, but according to Davis, it allowed her to get comfortable and connect with the audience.

Southeast president Dr. Carlos Vargas was among those in attendance. Towards the end of the concert, Dr. Vargas came up and gave a speech where he thanked Karla and everyone else for coming. The two were laughing and joking on stage, claiming that the next act would be called “Karla and Carlos.” Vargas also called up the presidential ambassadors and thanked them for everything they do.

Davis said she was a “late bloomer” when it came to music. She said she taught herself how to play guitar by ear when she was a senior in college, and only got in to performing after her friends found a song on her computer and made her play an open mic night.

“Without them, I don’t know if I ever would have pursued music,” Davis said.

After the first open mic night, the bar owner booked her regularly for the next six months until she went professional, Davis said.

Davis’ parents started her love for music early on with old country artists such as Carol King and Randy Travis. From there, her love for music grew. Although she is marketed as a country artist, Davis considers herself more of a country soul/americana singer/songwriter.

“I like music from a lot of different genres, and I think I pull from each one. I think that influences me and I try to emulate that without even realizing it,” Davis said.

There are three more concerts left in the Tunes at Twilight summer concert series held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Fridays.
