The accolades keep rolling in for Southeast preseason All-American senior running back Marquis Terry, who broke the school and Ohio Valley Conference records for most rushing yards in a single game, on SAturday in a 48-44 victory over Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Illinois.
On Monday, Terry was named STATS National Offensive Player of the Week and OVC Offensive Player of the Week for his 311-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Salukis.
"This is a very special win for our program," Terry said after the Redhawks win in the inaugural War for the Wheel. "I am thankful for [the] gift God has given me and I always want to play for something bigger than myself. This was a team win and everyone had a big part in it."
Terry beat the previous OVC record, set at 310 by Murray State’s Steve Chaney in 2005. Former Southeast running back Henry Harris had held the school rushing record at 293 yards, set in 2010. Terry is the first player to surpass 300 yards rushing this season in the NCAA.
Terry has six rushing touchdowns through the Redhawks’ first three games, tops in NCAA.
Combined with 13 yards receiving and 114 return yards, Terry broke Southeast and OVC single-game records with 438 all-purpose yards. He's the first player in the nation to top 400 yards this season.
Terry’s 590 total rushing yards and 196.7 rushing yards per game rank second nationally, and his 264.4 all-purpose yards per game leads the nation.
Terry’s record-breaking rushing performance, which came on 30 carries, came a week after he ran for 202 yards against Dayton, marking the first time a Southeast running back has rushed for 200 yards in back-to-back games since SEMO joined Division I in 1991.
The Redhawks next will face Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Richmond, Kentucky.
