Fall Career Expo coming to the Student Recreation Center

Tuesday, October 9, 2018

Southeast will hold its bi-annual Career Expo for students to explore future internship and career options, as well as an opportunity to look for part-time jobs.

The Career Expo will be held Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Healthcare Career Expo will be held on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Both events will be held at the Student Recreation Center.

Companies from Southeast Missouri, as well the Saint Louis area, will be able to speak to students about what they are looking for in a part-time job, internship and in full-time careers post-graduation.

Career Services director Dan Presson said the Career Expo has really taken off the past four or five years.

“These people have taken time out of their schedules to come to our campus specifically to recruit from SEMO,” Presson said. “We have filled this event up. We have a waiting list of employers wanting to get to this campus, and they are actively working to attract these students to their business. This event is a great way for a student who has never started to network, or who maybe isn’t even confident with their handshaking skills or small talking skills or their elevator pitch.”

Business attire is required to attend the fair, which generally consists of khaki or dress slacks and a polo for men, and a blouse and slacks or a dress for women.

Presson also suggested students bring several copies of their resume for employers who may want to keep a resume to remember future prospects after graduation.

There will be a variety of businesses in both the fall and spring Career Expos, and the type of job students are looking for may determine which expo they want to attend. Presson said the fall Expo is geared more toward financial-type businesses, while the spring Expo is leaning toward education-type careers.

For further information about the Expo, students can contact Career Services, located in the ground floor of Academic Hall, or visit the Career Services website at semo.edu/careers.
