On April 10, the Show Me Center was filled with a sense of empowerment.

The “Power of Women” Expo and Luncheon aimed to not only spotlight groups within the community, but to exhibit other programs around Southeast and to honor local women who are making a difference in the Cape Girardeau community.

Hundreds of students, faculty and community members flooded the Show Me Center to catch up with friends, support local businesses, learn more about the university and community and to get a few free goodies, too.

Director of development for the University Foundation Amanda Lincoln, who helped organize the event, said the expo and luncheon started eight years ago when a group of women got together and came up with the idea. The first event was held at the Wehking Alumni Center.

“We were hoping to have 80 people there, and we sold out. We reached max capacity of 100 people. So we had to move the event to the Show Me Center, and it has grown tremendously every year.”

There were a total of 38 partners, which were a blend of community and campus organizations. Some had tables to exhibit what they do and were also offering raffles and other free things.

Graduate assistant Brittney Swicionis has attended the expo for the past four years, and she said the event always exceeds her expectations.

“From meeting new people during the expo or listening to wise words of the featured guest speaker has me leaving with the motivation to continue to overcome challenges I may encounter as a young professional,” Swicionis said.

Sophomore Kenzie Kramer said she was inspired during the expo.

“It’s super cool to see women doing jobs that are predominately filled by men, and exceeding in what they do,” Kramer said.

The money raised from the tickets purchased went toward scholarships for 10 Southeast students, who each received $500.
