The agenda for the Nov. 29 Student Government Association (SGA) meeting included the allocation of money toward a humanitarian trip to Panama and proposals for a shuttle route during winter break.

The first topic of discussion was to allocate funds for the student organization Global Medical Brigades to fly to Panama on a humanitarian trip. The Global Medical Brigade is an international movement of students and medical professionals who work alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems.

The proposal is to give $2,000 toward 18 members’ airfare. SEMO pre-med students will be making the trip to give the group experience, as well as aid Panama citizens with eyeglasses and medicine.

SEMO alumni currently living in Panama will meet up with the students to assist with needs they may have.

SGA members passed the proposal, and the money will be given toward the Panama airfare.

The next topic up for discussion was the shuttle route during winter break. As planned, the shuttle route will remain closed from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day, and in the proposal the route will only run on Dec 22, Jan 5 and Jan 12.

Student government members discussed the shuttle being used for international students who would not be able to go home during the break, due to the new variant of the COVID-19 virus.

Theater technology senior Benjamin Arrigo encouraged members to vote yes on the proposal.

“I talked to students from Zimbabwe, and they will need the use of this shuttle,”

Arrigo said. “With the new travel restrictions, they can’t go home.”

After closing the discussion, SGA members voted in favor of having the shuttle route open for Dec 22, Jan 5 and Jan 12.
