The agenda of the Jan. 31 Student Government Association (SGA) meeting included a discussion of the proposed anti-sexual harassment statement to add to SGA bylaws, as well as the recognition of two new student organizations for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The first topic of discussion was if the anti-sexual harassment statement, proposed by Iota Chi, should be added to the SGA bylaws. SGA secretary Kate Appleman and SGA parliamentarian Luke Collins led the discussion of the bylaw.

The statement contains parts of the Code of Student Conduct in a way that it is easier to understand for students.

According to the SGA agenda, SGA and a majority of student organizations at SEMO do not have a statement in their bylaws that outline anti-sexual harassment policies.

The newly-established Greek-run organization Iota Chi, has a goal to raise awareness and push to eliminate all forms of sexual violence at SEMO. Iota Chi constructed a statement of anti-sexual harassment to be adopted by all student organizations.

“As a former Iota Chi member, I want to push this statement, because I want the student organizations to see that we care about them,” Appleman said.

This anti-sexual harassment statement was not passed or denied, but instead pushed to next week’s Student Government Association meeting.

The next topic on the agenda was the approval of two new student organizations, the Programing Activities Council and the Horn Club of Southeast.

The Programing Activities Council plans activities for the SEMO student body. SGA Treasurer explained the Horn Club of Southeast as a club for students that play horn-related instruments.

Both the Programing Activities Council and the Horn Club of Southeast were passed unanimously, with the full support of the Student Government Association.
