SEMO’s varsity Rocket League team got their second win of the season after defeating Culver-Stockton College on Feb. 1. The match consisted of three individual five-minute rounds, with SEMO winning the series 3-2.

Rocket League is a popular competitive video game where players are in control of supersonic, acrobatic, rocket-powered cars.

Southeast’s Rocket League team is composed of four three-player teams and substitutes.

The varsity Rocket League team is composed of Grand Champions, the highest competitive rank an individual can receive, and were led to victory by the match’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), senior business administration major Kyle Renaud. Renaud has been playing Rocket League since the game’s release in 2015.

Renaud said the key to a successful match is teamwork.

“We just want to go in there and work together as much as possible. It’s important that we all back each other up,” Renaud said.

Tryouts for the team were held last week, but senior accounting major and team manager Cody Bunger reported there will be another chance for players to try out on a date yet to be determined.

“The try out went pretty well but we’ve decided to schedule another tryout for players who were unable to make it due to a congested schedule,” Bunger said.

The next varsity Rocket League match is on Feb. 14 in the SEMO Esports arena at 6 p.m.
