SEMO baseball continued their impressive start to the season by defeating the Saint Louis University Billikens 16-5 on Tuesday, March 1.

Saint Louis was able to take an early 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but SEMO responded with three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Left fielder Jevon Mason set the tone, hitting a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning that he noticed seemed to feed the Redhawks batters a lot of confidence.

“I feel like getting the game started right is a big deal and so is getting the boys’ confidence going”, Mason said.

Coach Andy Sawyers said the confidence and energy the Redhawks show both on the field and in the dugout is something that they work on to use to their advantage.

“We actually work on how to be into it, how to have fun, and how to keep the conversation about baseball,” Sawyers said. “We try to take pride in having a good dugout and having good energy.”

Mason finished 3-3 including the homerun in the first inning. The other standout from the game was catcher Andrew Keck, who went 4-5 with seven RBI’s including a grand slam in the sixth inning. Keck believes this is what the Redhawks’ entire lineup is capable of.

“We have a pretty dangerous lineup, and I think that showed tonight,” Keck said.

The win puts SEMO at 6-1 on the season, including a record of 4-0 at home.

Mason said the Redhawks have played good, but aren’t losing sight of their ultimate goal.

“We want to win the OVC championship, so we’re on our way to getting that goal and hoping that we can keep the momentum going”, Mason said.

The Redhawks will look to continue their winning ways as they host Bradley Friday, March 4 at 3 p.m. to start a three game series over the weekend at Capaha Field.
